Caribbean Stud

Caribbean stud is a poker game that has grown in popularity in recent years. Like most forms of poker, it is a table game. However, in Caribbean stud, you have the chance to win a progressive pot through side bets. Though odds of winning the progressive jackpot are long, the idea of it has added to the appeal of the game. Additionally, it is important to note that the house has only a 5% advantage in Caribbean stud.

Caribbean stud is played on a table similar to a blackjack table. It is based on poker, so you need to know the order of hands. Like in blackjack, you are playing against the dealer and not the other players at the table.

At the beginning of each hand, every player makes an ante bet of the table minimum. At that same time, you can make your side bet for the progressive jackpot. Your ante goes in a circle marked “ante” that will be marked on the felt in front of you.

Each player will get five face-down cards. The dealer gets four face down cards and one up. Each player looks at his or her cards and either folds or calls. Your call bet is twice the ante.

Once you have bet or folded, the dealer flips his hand over. The dealer needs Ace-King or better to qualify. If he does not qualify, you will be paid even on your ante and will push on your call bet based on a table. If the dealer is in, you have to beat the dealer and are then paid for your hand.

The table pays out more for hands that are statistically harder to get. There is a table that lays it out. A pair is 1 to 1, two pair are 2 to 1, three of a kind are 3 to 1, and it continues up until you get to a royal flush that pays out at 100 to 1.

Since the dealer has to qualify; it is common for you to fold on a hand for which the dealer does not end up qualifying. A general rule of thumb for beginners, then, is to fold if you do not have at least Ace-King yourself and to play it out if you have better.

So what about the side bet? It is an odd little quirk to the game, but does add some excitement. If you choose to place a dollar on the side bet, you are looking at getting a pay out for certain hands. For a flush you get $50, a full house $75, four of a kind is $100, and as the hands go up form there you get a percentage of the pot. The odds of winning anything with your dollar are way less than even getting the hand you need. In other words, it is largely a sucker bet. If you do play it, though, you can win it even when the dealer does not qualify for the hand.

If you think Caribbean stud sounds like a fun game, then give it a try. There are several places online that you can play the game. For instance, www.casinobar.com offers Caribbean stud poker tables. Also, www.casino.com offers Caribbean stud poker as well. The nice thing about Caribbean stud is that there is very little variation in rules. So once you understand the game, you are ready for the table or to tackle a website. Just remember to try to forget the side bet. Take that money and stick to the table game, fold on less than Ace-King hands, and make sure you gamble responsibly.
