How to Read Moneylines and Picks
The moneyline is the amount paid for a 100 dollars bet on a team to win the contest outright. This is a straight pick; the winner propositions without any points given or taken. If the number is say +135, this team is an underdog and if it wins outright, you will receive 135 dollars profit for each 100 dollars bet. This is a total of 235 dollars paid to you for your wager.
If the opponent is say –165, a winning bet on this team will return a total of 265 dollars for each 165 dollars bet. The profit on this bet is only 100 dollars. The better also had to put up more money to win less profit.
When the better makes bets giving or taking points, the dog will usually pay less profit and the favorite will pay more profit than a straight bet. In both cases, they both could be –110. This means the better has to put up 110 dollars to win a profit of 100 dollars.
Sports books are creative in offering various bets to their patrons. You can bet on each quarter of a game of football or the first five innings of a baseball game. A favorite bet of many football betters is the parlay. This type of bet can turn a fifty dollar bill into well over 1000 dollars maybe even 2000 dollars. The secret to this bet is to use some solid favorites coupled with one or two long shots. Bets of this type usually have some casino restrictions on them as to the number of dogs that can be used vs. favorites. The bet path is as follows: The first game has all of the money bet on the ticket riding on its outcome. If it wins, the initial bet is put on the next game plus any winnings. Each win total goes to the next game. These bets are not easy to come up with, but professional sports betters will use this bet throughout the season.
There is another type of bet which can be made and that is called under/over. A number is listed as the under/over number. This is the sportsbook’s estimate of the total number of points or runs, which will be scored in the game. Bad weather can drastically reduce the number of points scored. In baseball a similar bet is total runs scored. It is still an under/over bet. This bet could be used in a parlay bet as well. Many betters of parlays will use the Monday night game as their last bet. The reason for this is the better can make a bet the other way on this game and guarantee a profit. It is a tough decision before the game starts. Do I make the safety bet or not.
Future bets can easily be made before the season starts. These can consist of who will get to the playoffs, to who will win the entire thing for the season. These have straight odds payoffs based on the teams estimated ability for the coming league games. It can be a large payoff for a small wager if a team that did not look that good on paper wins the whole thing. When in a casino or online, there are always people you can ask a question about a posted line or odds bet. Their business is to make a player happy and be as helpful as they can. Each betting parlor will try to keep your business. Just ask the question if you are not sure.
