Let it all ride,
and mean everything!
We've
all fantasized about it, and no I'm not talking about being marooned on a desert
island with Angelina Jolie (which isn't to say that I haven't considered that
scenario once or twice). I'm talking about that bet to end all bets; the
ballsiest bet of all; the bet to end all bets; the mother of all bets...taking
everything you own, cashing it in and punting it al on a single spin of the
roulette wheel. Imagine, in less than a minute you can double your net
wealth, or be totally wiped out. Not the type of course of action
your financial planer is likely to recommend, and let's face it, not the course
of action any one in their right mind would realistically entertain
right?...wrong!
Enter
Ashley Revell, an otherwise normal, mild mannered individual from Britain, who
one day decided he would let it all ride. And he literally meant
everything...selling up absolutely everything he and his family owned and
heading off for Las Vegas to bet it all on red.
Armed
with a cool $135,300, and a levels of faith (or stupidity) that could only be
measured by the ton, Ashley checked in to the Plaza Hotel and headed for the
Roulette tables. After a couple of small warm up bets, and with the
encouragement and best wishes of a fast gathering crowd, he placed his every
single cent to name on red.
After
a spin that surely must have felt like an eternity, the ball finally came to
rest on red 7. Ashley was all of a sudden worth $270,600, and surprisingly
smart enough to decline an invitation from the casino to double up again.
After tipping the croupier $600, he took his winnings, and a great story (sure
to lead to the bankruptcy of friends encouraged to follow suit) back to England.
And
what did his friends and family think about Ashley's big bet. Views did
differ markedly...
Father:
"He shouldn't have done it. He's a naughty boy. I tell my kids they
shouldn't gamble. I've got four others and they're all going to want to go the
same way".
Friend:
"It's just brilliant".
