Barney Frank's new online gambling law is going to have to wait a few more months, after pressing economic issues pushes its introduction date back.
The new bill, HR 2267, will not be introduced to Congress for debate any time before September now, as Frank's time and attention, as Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is demanded elsewhere for the time being.
The bill has been steadily accumulated support from both sides of the political spectrum, with 35 co-sponsors currently listed, comprising both Democrats and Republicans. Recent aggressive Justice Department initiatives to freeze US poker player accounts has stirred support for the bill amongst lawmakers and many believe it stands a good chance of succeeding.
If passed, HR 2267 will repeal the UIGEA and offer a licensing and regulatory framework opening the door for US based licensed online gambling operators, many of whom have been making preparations for a US launch as soon as the new law comes into effect.
