Online Craps Part 1 – the play cycle...

A lot of people miss out when it comes to playing, or rather, not playing craps online. This is understandable given how confusing the game must look to those unfamiliar with the rules of the game. What is going on with those dice? What do all those bets on the felt mean? True, there is a lot written on the felt, and with so much going on it is difficult to piece the rules together from the sidelines. The trick with online craps is to start small. First learn the play cycle and then learn how the most basic bets function in the game in terms of how you place them, the odds of winning them, and the level of pay out of each. As soon as the basic bets are understood the rest of the game and its dozens upon dozens of bets will make a lot more sense.

If you have ever observed real world or online craps you may have noticed that players take turns throwing the dice. When a player is given the dice they become the ‘shooter’. Once a shooter is established they remain the shooter until they ‘seven out’. After a ‘seven out’ the craps session closes and a new shooter takes the dice to begin the game anew.

Before going any further it is best to explain some terminology. For example, what does it mean when the shooter sevens-out? The best way to explain this, and other terms, is to describe a typical session of online craps.

You log in at your favorite online casino and navigate your way to the online craps. The player to the right of you just finished throwing, which means the dice are now handed to you. At this point, before your first throw (a.k.a. the ‘come-out roll’) people are busily making their initial (probably) ‘pass line bets’. If your come-out roll turns up a 7 or an 11 anybody who made a pass line bet instantly wins. A 2, 3, or 12, however, are the craps numbers and make an instant loser of everyone at the table that may have made a pass line bet. If the roll turns up any other number, (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) that number becomes the ‘point’.

Once the point is established a white marker will be placed on the respective number on the felt. Note the boxes that each displays one of the point numbers. This white puck signifies two things. First, it announces the point number to all at the table. Second, it establishes that the game is now ‘on’, i.e. a new session has officially begun, which means certain bets, such as the pass line, cannot be placed until the next coming out roll. If a point has not yet been established the white puck will be off to the side of the board and flipped over to show its black face. This indicated that a point number has yet to be established, and that the session is still ‘off’.

The point is an extremely important concept in craps, as the majority of bets on the table depend upon it. For example, suppose the come-out roll is a 6. 6 is now the point. The shooter must now roll a 6 before rolling a 7. To roll a 7 before the six is to seven out, and it also means many bets, including every pass line bet, becomes a loser. If the shooter is lucky, however, and rolls the point before the seven, all pass line bets (among others) become winners. The shooter retains the dice, and gets to make another coming-out roll. When a shooter is able to make several coming-out rolls in a row they are said to be ‘hot’.
