Looking to sure up their online gambling regulations, South African authorities are turning to Antigua Barbuda as the yardstick.
The South African government enacted its remote gambling legislation in July last year, providing the framework for a licensing and regulatory regime. Now it is turning its attention to regulating and enforcing the operative provisions of the laws, and is turning to Antigua Barbuda for some guidance on how best to do this.
According to a report in the Antigua Sun, a delegate of officials from the National Gambling Board of South Africa are spending the week in Antigua Barbuda with the Division of Gaming within the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC). Its seems the NGB holds the FSRC in high regard as a regulator of remote gambling activity and is keen to learn a thing or two before putting their regulations in place. And given the FSRC's almost 15 years experience in online gambling regulation and recent addition to the UK Gambling Commission's 'White List' I guess their confidence is understandable.
NGB CEO Mmathebe Thebi Moja said in a press release regarding the fact finding mission, "The NGB has chosen to understudy their detailed policy and regulatory framework before implementation of our legislation that sees to legalise and regulate online gambling,".
For its part, the FSRC is only too pleased to be acknowledged by fledging jurisdictions as a world leader in the remote gambling field, with one spokesperson noting "I am particularly heartened by the selection of the jurisdiction by the NGB as it underscores the confidence placed by the international community on our regulatory and supervisory machinery,".
During their visit the NGB delegation will be attending numerous presentations from the FSRC Board, relevant government agencies and the gambling operators.
