From Evangelical Quaker to poker Champ...
We know him for his famous two handed victory salute, and of course the unfortunate 'Watergate' fall from grace, but there's much more to the life and times of one of America's more infamous former Presidents...Richard Nixon. Born January 9, 1913 to Francis Nixon and Hannah Milhous, in Yorba Linda California, Richard Milhous Nixon's life was initially slated to be a very conservative one indeed. His mother had grand plans for her son to become a Quaker missionary, and raised him as an evangelical Quaker. This meant strictly no drinking, dancing, gambling, or swearing. It seems that having any kind of fun was frowned upon by the Quaker folks, and so it could not be seen as surprising that young Richard grasped an opportunity h to spread his wings and leave the nest. Despite being exempt from military service because of his Quaker birthright, Richard volunteered for a stint in the Navy (much to his mother's distress - she reportedly burst into tears when first seeing him in uniform). It is here Richard found his true calling...poker. Before long, Nixon established himself as a champion poker player, and soon became known as the best player in the Navy. Along with this title, came considerable winnings. It is estimated that Nixon accumulated almost $10,000 during his stint in the navy...a considerable sum in the 1940's and enough (it is rumored) to fund his run for Congress shortly after his naval service ended.
