Roulette Part 2: Outside Bets

Okay, in the previous roulette discussion we talked a bit about establishing a betting bank, a loss limit of maximum 50%, and winnings goal of around 5% to 10%. This is less a roulette strategy than it is a responsible betting norm for playing online roulette. Of course, this slow but steady betting pattern will do little good without some knowledge of which bets to make.

The thing to keep in mind when playing online roulette is that the game gives probably the stiffest house edge in the entire casino. 5.26% on all bets except the ‘five number bet’ in which it is a whopping 7.29%. There are few tactics for manipulating the probabilities. The best one can hope for in online roulette is a lucky streak and a means for spreading out losses. This in turn requires some knowledge of the game’s rules.

When speaking of online roulette, ‘rules’ is a rather euphemistic term. The rules of roulette are rather straightforward. You place a bet, the wheel spins, you lose or you win. Learning the rules of online roulette is really about internalizing the various betting options and the odds of each particular bet.

Most of you are probably at least vaguely familiar with the composition of a roulette betting board. For those brand new to the game, however, the board has a grid of numbers, 1 through 36, as well as a zero and double zero (0 and 00) located at the end of the grid. Each of these numbers is a possible bet. There are also four ‘outside’ bets located at the edge of the table. The outside bet can be red/black, odd/even, low/high, on one of the 12 number columns contained on the number grid, or in ordered dozens (1-12, 13-24, 25-36).

With a Red/Black you bet on which color the marble will land, red or black. There is a slightly less than 50% chance of winning this bet (0 and 00) are neither red nor black. Incidentally, 0 and 00 will cause any outside bet to lose. An Odd/Even will also win slightly less than 50% of the time, and as the name suggests is a bet on whether the marble will land on an odd number or an even one. Low/High is the last 50-50 bet on the roulette table. This is a bet on whether the marble will come up on a number 1 through 18 or a number 19 through 31. These three bets all pay even money. If you bet a dollar and win, you win one dollar from the house. Betting Columns or Dozens (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) reduces your chances of winning to a little less than 33%. The casino therefore rewards these at 2 to 1.

Inside bets are made on specific numbers or on combinations of numbers. There are several inside bets from which to choose, and the exact rules can vary from one online casino to another. If you are going to bet inside at the online roulette table, reference the table rules to avoid unwanted surprises.

Inside bets require more discussion than bets outside the grid. It can be said here, however, that the pay out of each inside bet can vary from 6 to 1 all the way up to 35 to 1. It can also be said that the odds of these bets actually winning are significantly less than the 50% to 33% found on outside bets. Outside bets are the safest and surest path to online roulette wins. If you are at the online roulette table and are about to go inside, proceed with care and caution.
