Online gambling...
Though it’s not
likely to be enforced, Washington State has made online gambling a felony. It’s
already illegal in almost every state in the United States but that fact doesn’t
seem to carry a lot of clout.
Online gambling has
become a multi-million dollar industry and ranges from playing Bingo to wagering
on horse racing. Poker is one of the most popular form of online gambling.
It was publicized in 2003 when Chris Moneymaker plunked down $40 in an online
poker room and went on to win that year’s $2.5 million World Series of Poker.
Since then online poker has grown at a phenomenal rate.
And why not? If we
want to wager money in our own homes, what’s the big deal? Besides, it’s a lot
of fun and can turn a boring evening around. Not to mention the incredible
events we can become a part of by wagering online. The Belmont Stakes, for
example, is an enviable event to attend but for those of us who can’t make it in
person, we can become a part of the cyberspace crowd cheering for our favorite
horse.
By placing an online
wager, we can become a part of events all over the world that we otherwise
wouldn’t. Sure we want to win, but it’s also an event to attend even if it is
in cyberspace.
Take the 2006 World
Cup Soccer month-long event. While there’s nothing like being there in person,
for those of us who can’t make it to Germany this year, we can participate
through online gambling. There are hundreds of different configurations to bet
on, not only score or winner related but also the zany, for example betting
whether or not someone will streak this year.
Online gambling
makes us a part of the crowd even when we’re not in physical attendance at the
most exciting events in the world.
