What is Responsible Gambling? 2

With the invention of online gambling, and television shows about gambling such as “The World Poker Tour”, gambling has become more popular than ever before. There are many different types of gambling; everything ranging from cards, to slot machines, to better on sports. Gambling can be fun; however, it can often lead to serious addictions, loss of money, depression, and in worse cases, problems with the law if the gamblers are not responsible about their hobby. It is very important for all gamblers to know what a responsible gambler is, and to try and practice these characteristics at all times.

Be in control of your Gambling

Responsible gamblers are always in control of their gambling. This is very important. Loss of control could cause someone to spend too much money, or get angry if they begin to lose.

Responsible gambling means always knowing where your money went. There is nothing worse than coming home from a night of gambling, realizing that thousands of dollars were spent, and having no recollection of where it went. A responsible gambler starts with a certain amount, and leaves when that amount is gone. Responsible gamblers can even set aside an entertainment account for gambling. They can spend all the money out of that account, but if they run out, they won’t spend any more money until they have it in that account.

When a responsible gambler is out gambling, he does not lose control when he loses money, he doesn’t get angry or upset. Knowing that you are just playing a game is one of the most important things that a responsible gambler can do. When gamblers begin to lose control because of losing money, this can be a sign that they are developing a habit or problem. They should seek help and quit gambling immediately.

One of the worst things that a gambler can do is chase a lead. Chasing a lead is when a gambler continues to play in order to get the feeling of a win, even if they are consistently losing. Irresponsible gamblers become obsessed with getting the next win, at any cost.

See gambling as a game not a job

Responsible gamblers only gamble with money that they have set aside for entertainment. This is extremely important when you want to go to a football game, but if you only have enough to buy groceries, you wouldn’t go hungry would you? People who develop gambling problems often start spending money that was meant for rent, bills, or in some cases, even money that they stole to continue their habit.

Gambling can be a fun pastime as long as gamblers realize that it is not their whole lives. Those who start to make it their whole lives have a problem…period. Responsible gamblers gamble with only what they have put aside for entertainment, not until they have spent all their money. If they start to work extra in order to gamble more, there is a problem. If they have to work extra in order to pay off gambling debts, this is worse. They also would not miss work or important family functions in order to do more gambling.

When responsible gamblers win, they do not see this as a paycheck, they see it as a reward. If they are trying to win in order to pay off another loss, they need to seek help. Winning in gambling should be fun and rewarding. It is OK to take that money and gamble with it, but only if you are doing it for fun.

Gambling can be a fun and rewarding hobby, if people keep responsible gambling in mind.
