Online Gambling and Work

Online gambling has become very popular, as it is becoming more and more high tech and is even offered in real time.  You can gamble online in many different ways, such as gambling on your typical casino games like poker and blackjack, which can win you a lot of money at the games that you are familiar with.  You can also choose to gamble on professional and college sports games, including football, baseball, hockey, and basketball.  There are even some websites that allow users to gamble on more unique games, such as cricket and more!  Online gambling has become very popular, so popular in fact that many gambling fans choose not to visit the brick and mortar casinos because they can do all their betting from the comfort of their own homes…or work desks.

The fact is that online gambling is very convenient, almost too convenient, and many people don’t know when to close the web browser window and stop gambling.  This is not only bad for the gambling addicts out there, but also for those that don’t know when it’s time to gamble and when it’s time to work.  More and more employees are being written up for logging onto gambling websites while they are supposed to be working.  The thought of many is that gambling while working is harmless because it only takes a moment to place a bet online, but employers do not feel this way at all!  The fact is that employers don’t pay their employees, even for a moment, to gamble online on their favorite table games, favorite sports team, or on anything else.

People often start with online gambling because it allows them to enjoy the thrill of the bet without leaving home.  It is a harmless activity if one keeps the gambling to a safe level and knows when it is and is not appropriate.  At home, at a friend’s house, even in a coffee shop with computer access is a great place to gamble online.  The office, however, is not such a great place, because you are there to do a job, and that is probably not a job that concerns football or basketball picks, lucky numbers, or a roll of the dice.  Online gambling is a lot of fun, when it is done in the right setting.  Unfortunately, the line between what is right and what is wrong is often blurred when gambling takes precedence in one’s life.

People often start gambling at work because they are bored, or they just want to check out the point spread for this weekend’s game when they are on a lunch break.  Before they know it, they are logging in every couple of hours to place bets.  Sooner or later someone is going to find out, because they are going to see you on a gambling website, they are going to look over the Internet usage logs, or your work won’t be getting done.  For obvious reasons, employers typically do not condone the use of office equipment for personal use, whether it’s writing a personal email or placing a bet in favor of your favorite football team.

Online gambling is neither good nor bad; it’s all in how it is used.  Most people can use gambling websites for fun in their free time, but every now and again the line between right and wrong is blurred and people start placing bets from work.  This is a growing problem, and many employers are confronting it by limiting Internet access to the websites that need to be accessed, and all others simply cannot be accessed.  Of course, online gambling is like other Internet content such as chatting and pornography, employers don’t like its use in their offices, but it happens more than any of us probably realize.
