Celebrity gambling tales...

It seems celebrities love to gamble just as much as the rest of us.  However, their gambling adventures are generally more interesting than ours, and also tend to be more newsworthy.

the high rollers...

Michael Jordan was reported to have spent over 9 hours at a Vegas Blackjack table during a single playing session.  And despite ending the session with a remarkable $1.7 million dollar winning streak, Michael still departed the table in a rather large hole.

those who want to be known as high rollers...

Following Evander HolyField'd upset win over Mike Tyson in their 1996 heavyweight title fight, Donald Trump volunteered to the New York news casters that he'd won $20 million on the fight with a $1 million dollar bet on the underdog (Holyfield).  When reporters investigated the claim, they found that no bookmaker had paid out $20 million on the fight and no bookmaker was offering odds of 20:1 on a Holyfield win.   So we don't know if Mr Trump is a high roller, but we definitely know that he wants us all to believe he is one.

gambling tantrums...

What do Omar Sharif and Jamie Foxx have in common?  They have both been evicted from casinos after brawling with security and police.  Foxx was arrested and charged with trespassing, battery on an officer and resisting arrest following a fight that began when casino security tried to evict him for refusing to show ID.  Omar managed to get a head but in during his scuffle with a policeman who tried escorting him from a Roulette table in 2003.  The 71 year old screen legend spent a night in jail for his troubles.

smart gamblers...

During a physics symposium in Vegas, Albert Einstein, to the surprise of many of his sober-minded colleagues, spent a great deal of time betting at the craps and roulette tables.
"Einstein is gambling as if there were no tomorrow," an eminent physicist remarked one day. "What troubles me," another replied, "is that he may know something!"

poker fan...

Larry Flynt was once asked about his lifelong devotion to the game of poker. "Being in a wheelchair," he said, "I don't do a lot of waterskiing.

unlucky loosers...

Both Mat Damon and George Clooney have played the part of the suave card shark on the big screen, but in real life it seems their luck/skill on the card tables isn't quite so good.  Damon recently entered a $10,000 buy in poker tournament and didn't make it past the first round.  Meanwhile, while playing blackjack during some down time filming Ocean's Eleven, George Clooney managed a loosing streak that amazed onlookers.  "Twenty-five hands in a row," Damon later marveled. "The odds were mind-boggling... There were professional gamblers in the place who were pulling back their chips until Clooney left."

and the ultimate loosers...

In 1978, US rock musician Terry Kath shot himself and died playing Russian roulette. His last words? "Don't worry - it's not loaded."

Playing poker at Saloon #10 in Deadwood, Dakota on August 2, 1876, Will Bill Hickock made the uncharacteristic decision to settle for a seat at the table with his back to the saloon door.  Holding a poker hand of a pair aces and a pair of eights, Hickok was shot on the back an killed by Jack "Crooked Nose" McCall.  To this day, the poker hand aces and eights is known as the dead man's hand.
